“This study is published within the framework of the first medium-term programme of activities of the ECML (2000-2003). Its purpose is not to give recipes. It is an attempt to investigate, theoretically as well as practically, certain important concepts in foreign language learning: dialogue, communication, intercultural awareness, language awareness, and the roles of teacher and learner. The articles present and discuss approaches to literature and other authentic texts in the classroom based on theoretical explorations of the relationship between reader and text and reading and writing processes as dynamic dialogues with the foreign culture. One of the articles investigates examples of intercultural exchanges using digital media where learners produce their own texts in order to enhance their language and cultural awareness. The main focus of all the articles in this publication is interaction: between cultures, between learners, between reader and text, and between teacher and learners. The study is also an attempt to widen the scope of the ongoing discussion about language and culture awareness by including aspects of linguistic, literary, philosophical, and didactical theories from the authors’ own cultures as well as from other traditions which have influenced their approaches to foreign language teaching and learning.” (Book Cover)
