520 _aThis is a COUNSELING-LEARNING approach or, in its specific ex-tension to second languages, a COMMUNITY LANGUAGE LEARNING exposition. Within the counseling-understanding atmosphere described here, certain learning activities have proved valuable. These activities are carefully structured to engage the learner as a total person, and to create a genuinely personal experience. The concept COMMUNITY LANGUAGE LEARNING emerged because, when these Counseling-Learning educational awarenesses are applied specifically to groups with the task of learning a Second Language, a very special kind of community involvement results. An intense atmosphere of warmth and belonging is produced which deeply relates each person not only to the teacher-knower but to everyone in the learning group. This kind of security and support from another, and the expert, is almost the exact opposite of the atmosphere created bu competitive, laissez-faire, classroom individualism. The student never feels isolated and regard of everyone else. In an almost literal sense, he or she feels everyone is pulling for them and and so is delighted by their even minimal successes. The following chapters, therefore, attempt to explain significant aspects of personality understanding and incorporate them into the learning process. While we are especially concerned here with foreign language learning, many of these concepts can be extended to other situations of child or adult learning... ( back over)
