"These unusual stories offer the reader colourful, realistic descriptions of life in Newfoundland and Labrador, and in immigrant communities in New York, around the turn of the century. Their publication presents an opportunity to become acquainted with the work of a Canadian author who deserves greater recognition than he has so far received. The settings of Norman Duncan's stories are far removed from the towns and villages of southwestern Ontario where he was born in 1871 and where he grew up. As a journalist whose work took him to many distant places, Duncan was a practised observer of unfamiliar modes of life, and his fiction, which grew out of his travels, is infused with the fresh outlook of the wide-eyed discoverer. While in New York, he wrote anecdotal tales of the Syrian immigrants he met there. But he is chiefly known for his intense and convincing stories of life in the fishing ports of Newfoundland, a life of courage, endurance, and grim struggle against the sea. This volume brings together the best of the Syrian and Newfoundland stories, many of which are drawn from rare and out-of-print editions, and includes the most extensive bibliography of Duncan's work so far published."
