"This collection of authentic Canadian short fiction has been expressly prepared for ESL students studying about life in Canada. Canadian Stories links Canadian literature in its original form with language learning activities. The reader is comprised of ten unabridged Canadian short stories from such authors as Ted Allan, Himani Bannerji and Gabrielle Roy, emphasizing family, friends and lifestyles in Canada in the twentieth century. Thematic organization of the stories allows students to combine their personal experiences with the literature and share their perceptions with the class. Pre-reading activities, a glossary for each story, comprehension questions, and a variety of language-based exercises familiarizes students with the literary elements of fiction and the use of Canadian English. The comprehensive Instructor's Guide provides many hints for teaching literature effectively in an ESL setting as well as ideas for extension exercises and activities.
