"Academic Encounters is an academic preparation series that uses authentic materials and a sustained content approach to teach students the skills they need to take college courses in English. There are two books in the series for each content focus: an Academic Encounters title that teaches reading, study skills, and writing; and an Academic Listening Encounters title that concentrates on developing students' listening, note-taking, and discussion skills. The two books may be used independently or they may be used together to form a complete integrated-skills academic English course.
Academic Listening Encounters: Life in Society develops students' listening and note-taking skills using a variety of recorded materials, including both informal interviews and formal classroom lectures. These engaging materials introduce students to stimulating topics in sociology, such as peer pressure, gender roles, and the influence of media. They also provide plentiful opportunities for speaking and discussion activities. An audio CD of the academic lectures, an important part of the audio program, is included with the Student's Book to provide students with additional listening practice."
