Summary: "The publication results from a workshop entitled 'Establishing Principles and Guidelines for Publishers and Authors of FL Textbooks in the context of the aims of the ECML' held in St. Petersburg in September 1997. The event brought together 50 textbook authors and publishers from 25 different European countries and provided a unique opportunity for the exchange of different linguistic and cultural perspectives and to work together in new directions. The workshop focused in particular on the following 3 aspects of FL teaching: authenticity, learner autonomy and cultural awareness, with the main objective being to draw up a list of preliminary guidelines for publishers and authors when designing FL materials. The publication sets out to present some of the principal theoretical issues underlying the topics in question and how authors attempt to implement aspects of these theories in their own work."
