"Basic Reading Power 1 is unlike most other reading textbooks. First, the book is organized in a different way. It has four separate parts that correspond to four important aspects of proficient reading, and therefore it is like four books in one. Teachers should assign work on all four parts of the book concurrently.
The four parts of Basic Reading Power 1 are:
Part 1: Extensive Reading
Part 2: Vocabulary Building
Part 3: Comprehension Skills
Part 4: Thinking Skills
Second, the focus of Basic Reading Power 1 is different. While most books focus on content, this book directs students’ attention to their own reading processes. The aim is for the students to develop a strategic approach to reading at this early stage, so that they learn to view reading in English as a problem-solving activity rather than a translation exercise. This will enable them to acquire good reading habits and skills, and to build confidence in their abilities, and thus help them gain access more quickly to English-language material for study, work, or pleasure.
For a successful outcome, teachers should follow the indications for work in pairs or small groups. Talking about their work will help students formulate ideas and consolidate vocabulary learning.
Basic Reading Power 1 is intended for students who are in a beginning-level English program. It is assumed that students who use this book will be literate and have an English vocabulary of about 300 words. They should be familiar with the simple present, present continuous, simple past, and future tenses.
In this third edition of Basic Reading Power 1, the approach remains the same as in the earlier editions, though in response to recent research as well as feedback from teachers, there is more emphasis on vocabulary acquisition and learning strategies. All units have been updated and more guidance has been added for students in learning the skills." (Book Cover)
